From above! From heaven!

John 3

Look carefully at John 3:3. See the word "again" as in "born again"? The Greek word here is "anóthen"  (509 Strongs).  This is the meaning of "anóthen"= (a) from above, from heaven, (b) from the beginning, from their origin (source), from of old, (c) again, anew.

Many of the commentaries say this should have been translated as "from above, from heaven".  While other's agree with "again."  Below the photo I have copied the Pulpit Commentary (one of my favorites) on both views.

Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Verses 3-21. -
5. The revelation of earthly and heavenly things to one who knew that God was with him. Verses 3-12. -
(1) The conditions of admission into the kingdom of God. New birth of the Spirit. Verse 3. - Many explanations have been offered of the link of connection between the suggestion of Nicodemus and the reply of Jesus. Many expansions or additions have been conjectured, such as the following, suggested by Christ's own language elsewhere: "You, by the finger of God, are casting out devils; then the kingdom of God has come nigh unto us. How may we enter upon its further proofs?" - a view which would demand a deeper knowledge of the mind of Christ than we have any reason to suppose diffused at this period. Others (Baumlein) have supposed Nicodemus to have said, "Does the baptism of John suffice for admission into the kingdom?" - a suggestion which would be most strange for a Pharisaic Sanhedrist to have extemporized. At the same time, it may be proved that the rabbis regarded proselytism as a "new birth," and one produced or brought about by circumcision and baptism (Wunsche, l.c. 506; Geikie, 1:505). Others, again, have put further words into the reply of Jesus, such as, "The kingdom of God is not in the miracles which I am working; it is in a state of things which can only be appreciated by a radical spiritual change" (Lucke). Similarly Luthardt. Nicodemus was thinking of the kingdom of God evinced by miraculous signs; and Jesus points him to the inner reality rather than to the outer manifestation. Godet sees the Pharisaic position in the question of Nicodemus, "Art thou the Messiah? is the kingdom of God near, as thy miracles seem to indicate?" He was assuming that, as a Pharisee, he had nothing to do but walk in the light, the dawn of which was revealed to him in the signs of a divinely sent Teacher. All these views embrace a large amount of possible conjectural truth; but they ignore the play upon the words of Nicodemus, which the answer of Jesus involves, showing that a sharp, clean retort followed the speech of the former. "We know that NO MAN IS ABLE to do these signs which thou art working EXCEPT GOD, BE WITH HIM. Verily, verily, I say unto thee, EXCEPT ONE be born anew, HE IS NOT ABLE to see the kingdom of God." The form of both protasis and apodosis in each sentence closely corresponds, and this correspondence suggests the fact of an immediate repartee. adopting even the form of the question or assertion of the ruler of the Jews. To the "we know" of Nicodemus, comes the "I say unto thee" of Jesus. To the general sentiment of Nicodemus Christ gives a personal application. In place of speculation concerning his own relation to God and to the kingdom, Christ searches in the heart of his questioner for spiritual susceptibility. Over against the general proposition about God being with the Worker of these signs Christ sets the practical truth and Divine possibility of any man seeing the kingdom of God. To the suspicion of Jesus being the Messenger and Minister of God, he opposes the supposition of being born from heaven, or anew. From ancient times commentators have been divided as to the meaning of the word ἄνωθεν - whether it should be rendered "from above" or "anew," "again." The first was favoured by Origen and many others down to Bengel, Lucke, Meyer, Baur, Wordsworth, Lange, based on the local meaning of the word in numerous places; e.g. "from the top" (Matthew 27:51), "from heaven above" (James 3:15, 17John 3:31John 19:11). Moreover, John uses the idea of birth from God, or by his will supervening on the life of man, and the consequent conference upon it of a new beginning (John 1:131 John 3:91 John 4:71 John 5:1, 4, 18). The great point on which our Lord insists is the Divine spiritual origin of the life of which he has so much to say. Several of the English versions, Coverdale's - and second edition of the Bishops' Bible - have adopted this rendering, with the Armenian and Gothic Versions. The Revised Version has placed it in the margin. Against it is to be brought the use of the verbἀναγεννᾶσθαι (1 Peter 1:3, 23, and in Justin, 'Apol.,' 1:6l) - a word which corresponds with this clause, ἄνωθεν γεννηθῆναι, and yet could scarcely be translated "to be born from above," but, "to be born again." The second rendering, giving a temporal value to ἄνωθεν, was adopted by Augustine, Chrysostom (who uses both views), the Vulgate, Luther, Calvin, Tholuck, Godet, Westcott, Moulton, Weiss, and Luthardt, and is sustained by the fact that Nicodemus was led by it to an inquiry about (δεύτερον γεννηθῆναι) a second birth. If the expression had had no ambiguity about it, and merely conveyed the idea of a heavenly birth, his mistake would have been greater than it was. There are, moreover, numerous passages confirming the temporal sense of ἄνωθεν (Wettstein and Grimm both quote from Josephus, 'Ant.,' 1:18. 3; and Artemidorus, 'Oneiroc.,' 1:13); and the παλιγγενεσία of Titus 3:5 points in the same direction. The Jewish rabbi ought to have been familiar with the idea of the "new heart" and "right spirit," and the marvellous and mighty change wrought in men by the Holy Spirit; but the spiritual idea had been overlaid by rabbinic ritualism, and all the hopeless entanglements of ceremonial purity which had been reacts to do duty for spiritual conformity with the Divine will. Archdeacon Watkins reminds us that the Syriac Version here gives the rendering "from the beginning," or "anew," and lays great stress on this solution of the ambiguity in the Greek word. The statement of Christ is very remarkable. A man must be born anew, must undergo a radical change, even to see the kingdom of God (cf. Matthew 18:3). The true kingdom is not a Divine government of outward, visible magnificence, sustained by miraculous aid - a physical sovereignty which shall rival and eclipse the majesty of Caesar. When the kingdom shall come in its genuine power, the carnal eye will not discover its presence. The man born anew will alone be able to appreciate it. The Jews boasted that they were born of God (John 8:41), but could not understand that they needed vital, fundamental, moral renewal - a second birth, a new beginning. Let the opening of Christ's Galilaean ministry be compared with this bold utterance. There in public discourse he called upon all men everywhere to "repent," to undergo a radical change of mind, and that because the kingdom of heaven was at hand. Μετάνοια portrays the same change as παλιγγενεσία; but one term denotes thai; change as a human experience and effort, the other as a Divine operation. Neither repentance nor regeneration commended itself to the rabbinic mind as a necessity for one who was exalted by privilege and ennobled by obedience. The phrase, "kingdom of God," is not a mode of representing truth to which this Gospel calls frequent attention. Still our Lord to Pilate (John 18:36) admits that he is himself the Head of kingdom which is "not from hence" - not resting on this world as its foundation or source. In Matthew the whole of the mission of Christ among men is repeatedly portrayed as "the kingdom of heaven." And from the time when the Lord ascended until now, various efforts have been made to realize, to discover, to embody, to emblazon, to crush, to ignore, that kingdom and its King. This great utterance is a key to much of the history of the Church, and an explanation of its numberless mistakes. Moreover, it supplies an invaluable hint of the true nature of the kingdom of God. Thoma insists on the other rendering of ἄνωθεν, and compares it with the Philonic doctrine, "that the substance of the νοῦς is not attributed to that which is created, but is breathed into the flesh from above (ἄνωθεν) by God.... Aim, O soul, at the bodiless essence of the spirit world as thy inheritance." These ideas, he thinks, John has placed into the lips of Jesus. The two classes of ideas are fundamentally distinct. Philo contrasts the sensuous and the intellectual; Christ is contrasting nature and grace.

Are you a spiritual person?

"We wrongly define what being spiritual is- what is the goal of the Christian life?

Here's what a spiritual person is, this is our goal:

Someone that's poor in spirit.  That mourns.  That's weak.  Hungers and thirst for righteousness.  That's merciful.  That's pure in heart.  That's a peacemaker.  That has joy when there is persecution. They are the salt and light of the earth.  Devoid of anger.  Say no contentious words.  Holds nothing against another. They have the spirit of agreement in truth, speech and attitude.  They are right in Him.  They turn the other cheek.  They go the second mile.  They love an enemy.  They pray for those that persecute them.  That is the Christian life.  And that is the life of Christ.  Matthew 5-7."

Mike Wells, Keeping the Focus audio

"In lesser time God used greater men.  But in this greater time God uses lesser men.  This is our day.  The day of the lesser man.  The one's He has been preparing in private.  The great men are gone and the one that no one thought God would use- He is using."

"Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things." Colossians 3:2

Love

Love is a language.  Anyone can speak it.

1 Corinthians 13

If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.

4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part; 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. 11 When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. 13 But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Book Review

A review of the book by Laura Story, "When God Doesn't Fix It" by one of my dearest friends:

http://amyb3blessed.blogspot.com/2015/09/recent-inspirational-read.html

What am I reading?

"At some point in life, we sense down deep that something is terribly wrong, or we feel empty inside, or we experience and unexplained restlessness.

Have you felt any of these symptoms?  If so, what did you do to fill the emptiness or to find peace?"

I felt this way- lived this way for 29+ years of my life.  I see so many living like I did. My heart aches so bad for them.

There is only One that can fill that emptiness and longing. One.

Can you imagine?

September 21, 2015

Can you imagine that you, your wife and your 3 year old child- and everyone you know being forced out of your own country? Whether it be political or religious reasons? Or no reason at all except that some men are evil and don't care about the lives of others?

Can you imagine when you, your wife and 3 year old child finally got to where you though you might could keep your little family safe to find out that you were going to have to live in a tent in a refugee camp for who knows how long?

Now imagine that 5 years into your stay at the camp someone comes to you and says, "America is accepting refugees. It's a LONG process. How about we get you started so you can raise your family to be free and to prosper- if you are willing to work and do your best?"

Ten...TEN LONG years later....process after process after process after process...and 3 more children- your plight as desperate as ever.

Finally, the long awaited approval has arrived. Your family of 6, who has lived in a camp and in a tent for 15 years has a chance at freedom. Real freedom. Not living in a camp- herded in like animals.

Always hungry. Never ever a chance for anything better in the camp. Can you imagine being this father or mother? Can you imagine watching your children grow up with no chance of any better?

 Can you imagine?

Even the worst in America has more than the refugees. Refugees who WANT to work, to do better, to be better, to have better, to feed their children, clothe their children- bathe their children, tuck them into a BED at night.

Have you ever let your kids go to bed hungry? Filthy? Cold? Who would want that? Nobody.

Today this family arrives in America. I cannot imagine how they are going to feel going to bed together as a family, for the first time in their life-in a home and not a tent.

God bless America. America who at it's core is FREEDOM from tyranny and oppression. Protector. A country you can actually breathe in the freedom. Live in freedom. Walk in freedom.

On September 23 our friends from Africa arrived!

New American Standard Bible
Simon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ:

King James Bible
Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:

Weymouth New Testament
Simon Peter, a bondservant and Apostle of Jesus Christ: To those to whom there has been allotted the same precious faith as that which is ours through the righteousness of our God and of our Saviour Jesus Christ.

Simon Peter, a servant/bondservant1401 doúlos (a masculine noun of uncertain derivation) – properly, someone who belongs to another; a bond-slave, without any ownership rights of their own. Ironically, 1401 /doúlos ("bond-slave") is used with the highest dignity in the NT – namely, of believers who willingly live under Christ's authority as His devoted followers.

and apostleCognate: 652 apóstolos (from 649 /apostéllō, "to commission, send forth") – properly, someone sent (commissioned), focusing back on the authority (commissioning) of the sender (note the prefix, apo); apostle.

of Jesus Christ,

Peter begins this letter by sharing his calling and by whom he as been called.  He is one who has no ownership rights to himself and willing lives under the authority of Jesus Christ, the One who has sent him.

to those who obtained/received-  2975 lagchanó: to obtain by lot, to receive by divine allotment

a faith (4102/pistis) is always received from God, and never generated by us. Faith (4102/pistis) is always a gift from God, and never something that can be produced by people. In short, 4102/pistis ("faith") for the believer is "God's divine persuasion" – and therefore distinct from human belief (confidence), yet involving it. The Lord continuously births faith in the yielded believer so they can know what He prefers, i.e. the persuasion of His will (1 Jn 5:4).

precious/equally precious- (HELPS Word-studies) Cognate: 2472 isótimos (from 2470 /ísos, "equivalent, equal" and 5092 /timḗ, "assigned price, value") – properly, having the same (equal) value; "equally privileged, held in equal honor" (Abbott-Smith); of consistent value (preciousness, make-up) and therefore deserving equal respect (recognition). 2472 (isótimos) is only used in 2 Pet 1:1 of "like precious faith" (isotimos pistis), conveying that every faith-decision (action) has equaleternal value.

as/with ours- 1473 "I" ego, personal possessive pronoun, dative first person plural

by/through- (HELPS) 1722 en (a preposition) – properly, in (inside, within); (figuratively) "in the realm (sphere) of,"  as in the condition (state) in which something operates from the inside (within).

(the) righteousness of- (HELPS) 1343 dikaiosýnē (from 1349 /díkē, "a judicial verdict") – properly, judicial approval (the verdict of approval); in the NT, the approval of God ("divine approval").2. in a closer sense, justice, or the virtue which gives each one his due; it is said to belong to God and Christ, as bestowing ἰσότιμον πίστιν upon all Christians impartially, 2 Peter 1:1

the God-  (HELPS) 2316 theós (of unknown origin) – properly, God, the Creator and owner of all things (Jn 1:3; Gen 1 - 3).  [Long before the NT was written, 2316 (theós) referred to the supreme being who owns and sustains all things.]

and Savior-  4990 soter:  savior, deliverer, preserver (HELPS) sōtḗr (a masculine noun, derived from 4982 /sṓzō, "save") – properly, the Savior, Jesus Christ who saves believers from their sins and delivers them into His safety

of us, 1473 "I" ego, personal possessive pronoun, genitive first person plural

Jesus Christ-  "Jesus Christ" is properly "Jesus the Christ." "Jesus" (2424 /Iēsoús) is His human name, as the incarnate, eternal Son of God (Mt 1:21,25, see also Lk 1:31) – the Christ, the divine Messiah (the second Person of the holy Trinity).  5547 Christos: [Christ (His title) means "the Anointed One" (the eternal pre-incarnate, Logos, Jn 1:1-18).] "the Anointed One," the Christ(Hebrew, "Messiah").

This letter is written to those who received by divine allotment a faith- God's divine inward persuasion- that is equally privileged, held in equal honor- precious- individually and as a whole.  We received this precious faith through (the inner realm- spirit and operates from Christ in us and in our spirit) through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ.  His righteousness, which He gave us- made us righteous and it is through His inward divine persuasion in which we live.

2 Corinthians 5:7
for we walk by faith, not by sight--
2 Corinthians 5:21
He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Grace is greater than I ever knew......

Did you know "grace" is mentioned about 7 times in the OT?
Did you know "grace" is mentioned over 110 times in the NT?
John 1:16-17 For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.
Paul writes of "grace" over 75 times.
2 Corinthians 9:8
And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed;
2 Corinthians 12:9“My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.”
Romans 5!
Ephesians 4:7
But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift.
Peter says to, "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."
Hebrews say, "it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace."
Jesus IS Grace.

45

45 hasn't been easy.  I don't know what happened but over the last few months before and since I turned 45 my body has- rebelled against itself.

My main problem was fatigue.  Then came a monthly headache only on the right side of my head.  My eyes would burn.  My throat hurt.  My mind felt "foggy".  And most curious of all- I spent the whole summer with my right arm itching.  I called it my "invisible bug bites".  I seriously thought I was going a little nuts.

So I thought all of this was one of two things 1) that tick bite I had in May or 2) my iron was low again.  Turns out it was neither one.

After talking with some friends and doing my own research I finally decided it was my- HORMONES!!!  UGGGG!!!!!  After MORE talking with friends and doing my own research I found what seems to work for my body.

I take the Estroblend at night before bed.  I take the One A Day, Ginko Biloba and Ginseng each morning.  I have been taking this blend since August 16th and by the next few days have felt great.  No more fatigue, headaches, burning, hurting, fogginess and NO MORE ITCHING!

Sidenote:  To save a few dollars I ran upon the brand name of Estroblend which is Estrovan, at the Discount Store in Ky.  It was only a $1 a box!  So I thought, "I'll give it a try."  It was outdated by a year.  DO NOT DO THIS.  LESSON LEARNED.  THE FATIGUE AND HEADACHES RETURNED AFTER A COUPLE OF DAYS.

The Gift-Wrap and The Jewel

The Gift-Wrap & The Jewel. By Wanda B. Goines
This lovely and eloquent woman of 92 wrote this poem I am sharing with you. Be blessed.- Kate Wilson

Grace Girls September 17, 2015

This morning I wake up with these words in my heart:

We have found our hope!
We have found our peace!
We have found our rest!
In the One Who loves!
His Love Endures!
Forever and Forever!

We had a beautiful time of fellowship last night as Patricia spoke about abiding in Christ at Grace Girls.  Finding our very life and all in all in Jesus!  Oh, His Love endures!  Forever His love endures! Each of us there was blessed by her testimony and speaking.

Her words resonate with Bill Gillham in the book, Lifetime Guarantee:

"The Christian life is not difficult to live- it's impossible to live!  God never intended you to live the Christian life at all.  The harder you try to live your life for God, the more frustrated you will become.  This is precisely the position of weakness and desperation from with the Holy Spirit wants to teach you the reason Jesus came into you. Jesus is the only one who ever has lived the Christian life, and He's the only one who can live it today- through you!  That's why God can offer a lifetime guarantee of abundant living- and why most believers have yet to experience it.  Christ now indwells you, Christian, to enable you to cooperate with Him to express His life through you moment by moment."

Friend, the abiding abundant life is available to you.  For it is Christ, Himself.

Jesus....I cannot do this unless you enable me.- Brother Lawrence

There is not another people like us....

Being a Christian- one who trusts in Jesus Christ as their Lord, their Savior, their very life- is a beautiful thing. Unique. We aren't a society, or a culture, or a nationality. We belong to all societies, cultures and nations but that's not who we are.
We have been bought with a price- His very own Life and Blood, shed on the cross to bring about forgiveness of the sin we were born with so that we can receive a new life, righteous and holy- because He is righteous and holy (2 Corinthians 5:17,21)
When He arose- we arose (a new heart and a new spirit Ezekiel 36:26) with Him! We will not die physically as the same person we were born physically- because we have been given a new inner man, the old- crucified with Christ- dead and buried (Galatians 2:20, Romans 6).
We have been redeemed and reconciled. Transformed. Exchanged.
The truth is, you can name ANY religion or cult you want in the world and it's man trying to reach God or trying to become their own god or be God. But it's still all up to man to get there. This takes no faith.
Being a true believer, a Christian, is the ONLY faith-based truth. If you have to do one thing, besides believe (John 6:29), then it is not true Christianity- it's not about Jesus- because He did it ALL for us to so that we could reconciled with God. You can't do one single thing to bring yourself to God, or be God or become God. If you think you can you have believed the lie.
As unique individuals, with Christ living in us- we are brothers and sisters united together as His body. We are One, in Him. He is the head of the body, the church. We are the church, and we are empowered by the Holy Spirit dwelling within us. We ALREADY have everything we need!
And we are called to take care of our own:
1 John 3:16-18
This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
James 2:15-16
If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,” and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that?

Which are you?

There are 4 types of people in the world:

I, not Christ= the atheist, agnostic
I and Christ= It will be me in charge, but I will let You take to heaven.
Christ and a little bit of I= I'll take care of the little things in life but I'm won't move from here.
Christ, not I= This is what we want to become.  (Galatians 2:20)

The first three emphasize your own strength.
The last is a condition of weakness for Christ is your strength.  (2 Corinthians 12:9) - Mike Wells

Well. It's here.

Yep. It's that time of year. The god called Ball has arose from its slumber for the next 7+ months.

Faith

Faith is not a way of speaking or even a way of thinking, it is a way of living.
"If you want to know what a person REALLY believes, don't listen to what he/she says but what he/she does."- Maurice Blondel
Only the practice of faith can verify what we believe. Does faith permeate the whole of your life? Does it form your judgments about death? About success? Does it influence the way you read the newspaper? Do you have a divine sense of humor that sees through people and events into the unfolding plan of God? When things are turbulent on the surface of your life, do you retain a quiet calm, firmly fixed in ultimate reality?- Brennan Manning
"Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you. All things are passing. God alone remains."- Therese of Lisieux.
Without faith, it is impossible to please God.- Hebrews 11:6
Whatever is not from faith, is sin.- Romans 14:23
"God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."- 1 Samuel 16:7
"for with the heart a person believes"- Romans 10:10
“It shall be done to you according to your faith.”- Jesus, Matthew 9:29
