Last year Nick and I made the decision to let go of our health
insurance where Nick is employed at. Honestly, the weekly cost and
deductible was so high- it just wasn't worth it. We are relatively
healthy- and are trusting God with our health.
We decided to go
with Christian Healthcare Ministries- it's where Christians help other
Christians pay their medical bills (which I am so happy about!), and it
exempt from the healthcare law. A good friend of ours really talked
with us, guided us and walked with us. We chose the silver plan- which
means we have to pay for our doctors visits but CHM will help with
anything hospital/surgery related- and our sharing part of the
hospital/surgery incident is $1000.
And of course...something
comes along. Our son Johnie had to have surgery over the summer. His
total bill was $30000. But part of being with CHM is you have to
negotiate with the doctors and hospitals on the price. You can either
pay or set up payments. Then CHM will reimburse you. They do not deal
with the hospitals and doctors.
Spartanburg Regional hospital
and doctors give a 50% discount if you pay within 30 days. We knew
Johnie was going to have surgery so we got a credit card with 0%
interest for 1.5 years- and paid Johnie's bill IN FULL the day of
pre-op. Then a couple of weeks later, they sent us another bill for
$2500 more because they didn't know how much was actually going to cost
until it was finished. So- in total we put $15000 on the credit card.
It DOES take some work on our part to get everything sent to CHM and
finalized. It took about 10 weeks for them to send us a check for about
3/4 of the bill and then another four weeks to finish it- TODAY!!!!
But...we got SO MANY discounts ($15000!) we didn't have to pay our sharing part of the bill, $1000.
We are so thankful for CHM. So thankful for our friend Wilma who
helped us get everything together. It does take so work on our behalf-
but honestly- I'm glad to know what's going on. When we had health
insurance we didn't really know.
CHM has been a huge blessing in our life!
